Made in Guangzhou

I am so excited to finally be able to share with you the editorial I photographed on my last trip to Guangzhou, China.  I don’t know if many people know that my day job is working as a Senior Womenswear Designer…and as such I find myself in China an awful lot.  For example, I am going again on Monday…and it will be my tenth trip!  Prior to my last journey, I have always kicked myself for not taking more images of the incredible fabric & craft markets.  Before I first came to Guangzhou, I had no idea what to expect…and couldn’t possibly imagine the sheer volume of supplies and industry behind everything that I saw.  So on my last trip, I made it my mission to document what I saw, with a hope to share this aspect of the garment industry.  I was lucky enough to have my story picked up by Frankie Magazine, so if you get your mittens on the latest issue, you will see some of it!

I can’ t help but share more of the images form my story, that haven’t been published.  As you can see, there is just so much texture and colour and amazingness to behold throughout the markets.  It’s amazing to me that so much of what can be seen in the markets is destined to live in foreign boutiques and on bodies so far removed from the space it originated in.  I think about Guangzhou a lot, and I feel like in many ways, the city has had a profound influence on my personal work. I find a strange beauty and magic in seeing things on mass, all glittering and spilling out.

The market is a strange place of contrasts.  One minute you will be strolling through a lustrous sequin library, and the next you will find yourself confronted with a grey, urban metropolis…or someone sleeping on a bed of shiny belt clips.
