Last week I was lucky enough to find myself in New York for a speedy work trip. This was my third trip to NY, but my first where the sun was actually shining! My other trips to the city have been punctuated by icy breezes and hectic rain, with the streets of the city turning into aggressive wind tunnels. So it was hard not to feel as though I was stepping out into the streets for the first time! It made exploring much more pleasant and meant that we could walk around all day without needing to find constant shelter from the cold.
Looking for inspiration and newness, we ventured into a number of impossibly expensive, but nonetheless dreamy/inspiring, boutiques including Simone Rocha, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Celine, and Mansur Gavriel. Whilst I can’t actually shop any of these boutiques, I treat them like galleries, savouring the pieces and shop-fit-outs like artworks to be admired and immortalised with photographs.
The Simone Rocha store was one of the most beautiful concept spaces I have ever experienced. It was like stepping into the the pages of a visual diary. At the entrance was a beehive-turned-sculptural installation of honeycomb in perspex boxes. The window display was a texture-sensation…arbors covered in stiff, cellophane flowers framed some of Rocha’s incredible garments.
Maryam Nassir Zadeh is located in the Lower East Side, tucked away in its own immaculate paradise. The store has been perfectly curated, obviously featuring the title brand plus other drool-inducing labels including Jacquemus, Basearange, Caron Callahan and Mari Giudicelli. I loved how everything in this boutique had been considered and highlighted. I wanted everything in my life from the jewellery – to the plants – to the ceramics – to the rippled concrete slab that the jewellery was displayed on!
Staying in the Lower East Side meant that we were in walking distance to everything we needed…plus everything we didn’t know we needed, including an incredible little art gallery we stumbled across on Suffolk Street! The Rachel Uffner gallery was showing an exhibition by artist Leonard Hurzlmeier, “All New Women”, and whilst we accidentally stumbled upon it – it had to be one of my favourite things that we saw!
On the sunniest day of our trip, my friend Anna wore the most incredible pink dress that she made…
All good things must come to an end, and after only 4 days of exploring it was time to head home once again. I know this won’t be the last time…so see you again soon New York! I really really really really like you!!
