BORDERS Brisbane City Live Dressmaking!

On Friday night, I had the pleasure of making a frock in BORDERS Brisbane City to collect some donations and generally get my promotion stylingz on.

Making this dress on a mannequin (to avoid the gracious stares of the more ‘eccentric’ Friday night shoppers) I constructed it out of a selection of fabrics and flowers made from the pages of the wondrous ‘Rush’ magazine.

Such immense fun, i shall be doing a similar montage this Thursday night at BORDERS Chermside at 6.30pm…totes be there.

Oh, Ashleigh!!

Photos by Andrea Jankovic

This is Ashleigh Dwyer.  She makes me want to rhyme my words and high five people.  I met this girl a couple of years ago and ever since words like ‘lover’, ‘delightful’, ‘pleasing’ and ‘fun’ have pervaded my vocabulary to the point where it started to get uncomfortable – last year I called my grandma “lover”…she’s a short ethnic woman with the beginnings of a moustache.

Ashleigh is an incredibly talented actress, and one of the most stylish humans I’ve ever had the pleasure of shrieking “I LOVE WHAT YOU ARE WEARING!!!” at.  Sadly, she is moving to Melbourne soon, but whilst we still have her I have seized the opportunity and this saturday night will be making her a frock.

So yeah, pretty enthused…so you should be too. Tune in Saturday to keep tabs on the process – i have a feeling it will be visually more appealing than the election….call it a hunch…

Dress 2: The Good, The Process and the Tomato

Hi now!

This week’s journey to “Dressmaking Funtimes” began with an epic: ouch.  Whilst sitting at the bus stop, about to begin my journey to work, a van of hooligans performed a drive by fruiting – and my shin was their victim. As a torrent of profanities poured out of my mouth (whatever hit me had really REALLY hurt) I soon saw the weapon – a firm tomato lying casually by the timetable pole.  Naturally, I was outraged. What kind of person doesn’t think to squash the fruit before hurling? I mean I’m no drive-by expert, but isn’t the whole point of an egging/fruiting/red painting to dirty the victim up a bit?  Otherwise why not just throw tennis balls, old appliances, and ABBA tribute albums out the window?  All I know is, is that if that tomato had hit me in the face jazz would have gotten real…and whilst my nose has always wanted to meet the back of my head – I personally have never been so keen.

The trip to DRESS 2 nonetheless ended with a giant: hurrah!! The frock that was made this week was for Nicola Scott, and in my fabric basket was a selection of burgundy, velvet, black tulle, lace, plain black fabric, and a zip.  At first glance, my choice of colors and textures looked a little goth, but I was determined to make her look less like a Marilyn Manson enthusiast and more like a foxy, foxy lady.

Creating an off the shoulder cocktail dress, my favorite aspect of this frock is the black tulle ‘boof’ on the shoulder   Whilst at first I was a little unsure about the vinyl breast plate, I nonetheless went with it…and I feel that Xena: warrior princess would indeed be proud of my efforts.

I must confess that I ran into a bit of a drama with my choice in cotton.  Apparently I had thought that silver cotton would go excellently with black and red fabric – blindly grabbing a pack of three whilst on my 15-minute break at work.  Apparently I was deeply misguided.  The “spirit of thread” lead me wrong.  About half way through the dress -making I took a step back…and it looked like I had sewn everything together with floss – not an attractive look.  Luckily, there was a black texta on hand, so I quickly saw to rectifying my failure with some crafty coloring in and success was had.

I was really happy with this frock.  I felt it really suited the ever-saucy Nicola, and she certainly got an excellent response when we headed out on the time.

Anyway humans, got to dash…be back soon for more chatz potatoes.

Dig you all.
